Based on the European Tea Culture Research Circle, founded in February 2021, the European Tea Culture Institute ETCI was founded in January 2024 as an independent institute offering an interdisciplinary environment for research and education regarding tea cultures in Europe. We are dedicated to researching, preserving and promoting the rich and diverse tea culture in Europe. Our mission is to analyse and honour the multifaceted world of European tea traditions. This ranges from the historical tea cultures in Great Britain, East Frisia, Türkiye and Georgia, to researching the activities of great European tea entrepreneurs (e.g. Lipton, Ronnefeldt, Messmer) as well as the role of teaware, to the up-and-coming tea plantations in Scotland, Sweden, Italy, the Netherlands and other European countries. For the ETCI, tea is far more than just a drink — it is a passionate symbol of cultural heritage, social connection and regional identity.
