As we embark on “The Newburgh Sankofa Project,” we embark on a journey to celebrate this remarkable narrative, to honor the rich history of Newburgh as we celebrate Black joy, contributions, and triumphs that have shaped our City and community. At the heart of this project lies the concept of Sankofa, an Adinkra symbol from the Akan people of Ghana, symbolizing the importance of looking back to move forward. As we delve into the chronicles of history, we are confronted with the stark realities of slavery, segregation, and systemic oppression that have marred the path of Black American progress. However, intertwined with these struggles(focusing primarily on Newburgh, NY) are tales of unbreakable spirits, unwavering resolve, and extraordinary achievements.
