Schoolyard Scientists

Schoolyard Scientists is a youth-driven conservation education initiative that empowers children and educators to explore, document, and protect biodiversity in their own schoolyards. Supported by the National Geographic Society, the program transforms schoolyards into living laboratories, fostering curiosity, scientific thinking, and environmental stewardship.Through hands-on biodiversity monitoring, storytelling, and field experiences across Sri Lanka’s diverse ecosystems, Schoolyard Scientists nurtures empathy towards nature and inspires the next generation of conservation leaders. The initiative collaborates with educators, researchers, and conservationists to integrate outdoor learning into education, bridging the gap between classrooms and the natural world.
