Promoting the Blues since 1982The Southern California Blues Society is a 501 (c )(3) all volunteer, non-profit organization that was started in 1982 by a few wonderful individuals who were devoted to preserving and promoting the Blues in the Southern California area. For 30 years SCBS has kept to that original mission.SCBS has held the annual Topanga Blues Festival since the early '80s. As an ongoing "boutique" concert experience for all fans of real, no-frills, hardcore Blues in Southern California, it has hosted many headliners of legendary status and many others who are lesser-known, but just as awe-inspiring. This hip, little event remains a favorite for those who are happily "in on the secret". The Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum, where it has been held since its inception, is an intimate, 300-seat outdoor theatre nestled in a rustic vale deep in the shady forests of Topanga Canyon, the concert continues to grow in popularity and has sold out for the last three consecutive years. It is safe to say that the secret is out.In addition, to the Topanga Blues Festival the SCBS focuses on putting on shows spotlighting various blues artists within our community. These events are quickly becoming annual concerts that fans look forward to attending, events such as the LA Juke Joint and Blues Fest, which brings our fans an evening of real-deal blues with many of the performers having been bluesmen for over 40 years, Our Six String Showdown spotlights some of the best electric blues guitarists in Southern California, in the same way our Battle of the Blues Diva’s gives our fans and supporters an evening to discover both established and up and coming blues divas whose talents are amazing. Another favorite that brings the focus to our local talent is our participation in the International Blues Challenge. The SCBS first became an affiliate organization of The Blues Foundation in 1999 and has over the years actively participated in this competition. In fact, we are very proud of the fact that our Regional IBC winner, Zac Harmon, won it all in Memphis in 2004.With an active social networking focus and ongoing emails to our supporters, the SCBS is dedicated on keeping the SoCal Blues fan up to date on Blues news when it happens. We have a growing list of corporate supporters who offer discounts and free tickets to live blues entertainment within our community. Currently the SCBS has become the most active Blues Society in the Southern California area dedicated to promoting the blues through high quality, intimate concerts easily accessible to the hard core SoCal Blues fans and we have no intention of slowing down. Our history is rich with great fans, talented performers and dedicated volunteers. Through the work of the current Board of Directors and all those who came before us, the Southern California Blues Society has touched the lives of many Blues Fans. It is because of the Blues Fans in Southern California that the SCBS remains committed to keeping the blues alive in our little corner of the world.Through compassion, entertainment, inspiration and complete dedication, we remain focused on our mission to preserve, promote and advance the culture of the American Blues music tradition for the benefit and education of our members and the general public in Southern California.
