Chris‘s first encounter with yoga was in 2002 during his years of university studies. His initial intuition was based on the elegance of the yoga poses that he saw from the yoga journal magazines. Since then, Chris began to teach himself some basic yoga poses from the yoga journal magazines. Chris‘s major of studies was engineering as studying was demanding and stressful. He started to experience some of the stress relieving aspects of yoga poses. Since then, the passion of practicing yoga was planted in Chris‘s mind.Yoga Education :After Chris returned to Hong Kong in 2004, he started his basic yoga teacher certification training from Australia Fitness for Trainer and Professionals. Chris found that there’s a need to further deepen himself after his first training so he found Dickson Lau as the founder of Hong Kong Yoga Association and he studied both basic and intermediate hatha yoga teacher training program with Dickson Lau. During his time with Dickson Lau, he studied and learnt his philosophy and approach of yoga practice and teaching which were based on applying traditional Taekwando and martial art methods of developing muscle elasticity and joint flexibility blended with traditional hatha yoga techniques to practice variety of yoga poses.After spending 1 year with Dickson Lau, Chris found that upon the flexibility and elasticity of the physical body to practice yoga poses, certain internal aspects like strength and stability; awareness on prana flow, ujjayi breath as well as practice of bundhas ( energetic locks) concepts were missing.Chris found the learnings and practice Ashtanga Yoga vinyasa in 2005, that’s the beginning of his Ashtanga Yoga journey. Chris devoted his Ashtanga practice with several Ashtanga teachers and his passion and interest in this practice continue to grow and escalate. By the end of 2005, Chris participated a 200-hr Yoga Alliance Teacher Training program in Ashtanga Yoga Vinyasa in Centered Yoga Institute , Koh Samui, Thailand.Since then , Chris continued to maintain his Ashtanga practice from 2005 til the present.Along side with the practice of Ashtanga, Chris also found the studies of Pilates essential. In 2009, he studied a both Mat and Reformer Level-1 Teacher Certification with Stotts Pilates. Chris‘s journey of yoga practice was influenced by some joint and core alignment stabilisation from Pilates which enhanced his practicing awareness on injuries and better alignment of practice .During his time of Pilates studies, Chris studied subject of musculoskeletal system and biomechanics of human body, and how to apply these knowledge on postural alignment issues that induced back pain, neck and shoulder discomfort and other structural issues of the body.Chris‘s interest and pursue in anatomy and physiology of the human body came into his journey of learning apart from just the musculoskeletal system of the body, so he pursued the studies of massage therapy where he studied the complete spectrum of human anatomy and systems as well as pathology of the body.By the time of 2009, Chris started to commit his yoga teaching profession in one of the biggest yoga corporation , Pure Yoga. Since then , Chris had been dedicated in learning how to be a traditional Ashtanga Mysore teacher so he dedicated his time to study with other Ashtanga teachers . Along side with that learning , Chris dedicated his work in teaching varieties of yoga group classes ; private 1-1 classes ; yoga workshops . Chris began to study Wall Rope Yoga with other senior teacher who studied Iyengar system of Hatha Yoga.In January 2020 , Chris studied Ashtanga Yoga with Sharathj Jois for 1 month in Mysore , Karnakata, India where he experienced the traditional Ashtanga Yoga practicing lifestyle and community life. It was his wonderful opportunity to study yoga philosophy and Sanskrit with Sanskrit scholar alongside with his Ashtanga practice with Sharath Jois.By the beginning of 2021, Chris resigned from Pure Yoga and Continue his yoga teaching profession to a next level where he needs to continue to manifest his dedication and devotion in his yoga practice and studies as well as his consistency in his yoga teaching professionalism. It will be a wonderful new journey of his venture and to see where this will lead him to…….Currently, Chris participated in teaching small group yoga and Pilates classes as well as tailor making some 1-1 private yoga sessions with his clients .During his 1-1 Private Yoga session:* He specifically able to identify clients musculoskeletal and postural imbalances and applied some yoga and Pilates teaching techniques and skills to help clients* Specific yoga techniques such as asanas, pranayama and yoga therapy can be used to help clients regain physical , mental and emotional harmony* Pilates techniques can be used to strengthen and tone up some weak stabiliser muscles that can reinforce clients structural alignmentYoga Experience :* 2004-2005. Dickson Yoga* 2005-2009. Living Yoga* 2009-2021. Pure Yoga* 2021-present. Pranava StudioPhilosophy of Teaching:Chris‘s philosophy of teaching are based on two aspects.1. Physical AspectPhysical aspects emphasis and focus on the energetic flow and rhythm of the practice of yoga poses; two, stability and endurance of staying in the yoga poses; three, alignment and joint openings when practicing the yoga poses; lastly, the breath quality during the practice of the yoga poses .2. Mental AspectMental aspects emphasis on following notions depicted from Yoga Sutras of Patanjali:1st Notion - Practice comes along with Non-attachmentYoga Sutra 1:12 (abhyasa vairagyabhyam tat nirodhah)Chris emphasis on the practice of yoga poses involves the input of effort , at the same time , to the certain extend, one needs to ease off and let go of one’s ego2nd Notion- Qualitative Practice involves long term commitment, continuous passion and rightful attitudesYoga Sutra 1:14 (sah tu dirgha kala nairantaira satkara asevitah dridha bhumih)Chris emphasis on the practice of yoga poses should involve a sense of long term consistency; having a sense of regularity as well as a positive mindset of devotionStyles of Yoga TeachingChris’s styles of teaching involves a wide varieties of disciplines of approaching the practice of Hatha yoga.Here are the following spectrum of his styles of teachings:Dynamic approach:- Ashtanga Yoga Vinyasa- Vinyasa Flow- Gentle Flow- Hatha Core / PilatesMix approach ( Dynamic & Static)- Hatha Yoga- Yin Yang- Mix Vinyasa & Stretch- Core & InversionStatic approach- Wall Rope Yoga- Yoga Therapy
