Te Kākano Aotearoa Trust

Te Kākano Aotearoa Trustis a Wānaka non-profit organisation that eco-sources seeds from the Upper Clutha area, raises seedlings in our extensive nursery, and facilitates community-based native planting and habitat restoration. We foster community engagement with native habitat restoration, through plant propagation, planting, maintenance, education and ongoing participation. Collaboration with local community groups, schools, businesses and individuals is central to our promotion of hands-on community land care. The ‘Interwoven’ projectThe project started at the end of 2023 when our education team thought about ways to integrate mātauranga Māori in our education programme. Thanks to a local weaver, Enger, a design was created for a harakeke plant guard that could be used to protect the native plants we put in the ground with the community. The goals of Interwoven are to:establish harakeke / flax as a sustainable and biodegradable material for plant guards used by Te Kākano and other providers of regenerative plantings on public land.authentically connect with tangata whenua, and honour the wealth mātauranga Māori offers for our future in Aotearoa New Zealandeducate and empower communities, especially young people, to source sustainable alternatives to plastic. This programme is made possible with thanks to the Warbirds over Wānaka Community Trust, Sargood Bequest, the Di Buchan Environmental Trust and Queenstown Lakes District Council.www.tekakano.org.nz
