The Bread Project

The mission ofThe Bread Projectis to help low/no-income residents of the Bay Area with multiple barriers to employment acquire new job skills and jobs on their journeys to economic self-sufficiency. We primarily serve formerly incarcerated women and men, immigrants and refugees, and others with barriers.California is a world leader in incarceration rates with 581 individuals per 100,000. More than 325,000 Californians are currently on parole or probation and the recidivism rate is 46%.California has the largest number of immigrants of any state in the U.S. with 27% (nearly 11 million) of its population foreign-born. One third of the residents of Alameda and San Francisco counties are immigrants, half of whom have a high school diploma or less. The Bread Projecthas a vision for all reentry and justice-involved individuals as well as immigrants and refugees, to be able to become self-sufficient and contribute to their communities through stable, gainful, and fulfilling work. We leverage the power of food prep and baking job training and placement assistance to support the integration of these men and women into society.
